Als empirische therapie heeft ciprofloxacine de voorkeur boven cotrimoxazol en amoxicilline-clavulaanzuur op basis van lokale resistentiecijfers.
Altijd rekening houden met de resultaten van eerdere kweken.
Bij klinisch herstel wordt controle kweek afgeraden.
